From The Pastor

Part One

It is election time in our Synod and Conference and we are looking for people willing to serve their Lord beyond the congregational level. The following positions are up for election. If you are interested see Pastor Dale.

1.Synod Council (ADULT) – three-year terms, terms expire 2015

Our conference needs to nominate two lay male delegates. Currently James Neitz is serving and he is eligible for a second term.

2.Voting Members To The ELCA Churchwide Assembly - August 12-18, 2013, Pittsburgh, PA

The Upper Susquehanna Synod has 9 voting members to the ELCA Churchwide Assembly. Under constitutional provisions, the Synodical Bishop and Synodical Vice President are voting members. Each conference nominates one representative, and there is one at-large position, for which the Synod Nominating Committee will seek nominees.

Our Conference needs to nominate two Lay Females as a Voting Member AND an Alternate Voting Member:

3.Synod Council (YOUTH) – two-year At Large term, term expires 2014

This youth member must be under 18 at time of election. Currently Katie Zeigler is our representative but she is NOT eligible for re-election.

Elections will take place at the Synod Assembly held at SusquehannaUniversity on June 15-16, 2012. I serve on two Synod Committees, but our only congregational lay member serving at the Synod level is Peggy Biesecker who is the Synod Council secretary. Her current term is up in 2013.

Part Two

“For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.” (Romans 6:5).

Easter is the victory over sin and death that God has made possible through Jesus Christ in every believer. This is not a once a year event, but a life-time gift, and when we truly believe this, it changes us forever. For just knowing about it is not enough. In Romans 6:11 Paul tells us we must now consider ourselves dead to sin because of the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of every believer. And that presence exhibits itself through holiness. And that holiness is shown in the way we act towards others, in our worship, in our prayer, in our speech. For when we believe in Jesus, he is not just in our head. Jesus is in every part of our body, and thus a part of everything we do and say. It would be like inviting a friend over to our house, but only allowing that friend to visit us on our front porch, never letting him have access to any part of the house. That is not being a good host.

When Jesus is invited in, he invades the whole of our lives. And it is his holiness that is imparted to us, making us holy before God and members of a new spiritual order. Sin keeps us from God. Christ’s holiness brings us to God and leads us to do the things of God. And that is our spiritual heritage that unites us with him. May Easter’s victory manifest itself in every member of St. John’s.
