According to the PMBOK®, “Project Managers accomplish work through the project team and other stakeholders.” Our professional standard goes on to state that, “Effective project managers acquire a balance of technical, interpersonal, and conceptual skills that help them analyze situations and interact appropriately.” In other words, knowledge of the project management methodology alone does not make one an effective project manager. The majority of a project manager’s time is shared with their project team members trying to navigate constraints, identify and resolve sources of conflict, manage risks and issues, etc. Simply stated, a project manager’s ability to develop a trust-based rapport with stakeholder groups can have a very real impact on their ability to meet their goals.
