The Take-Me-Anywhere

Camp Cooker

The Take-Me-Anywhere Camp Cooker is a cooker that can be used anywhere. You can use it with different kinds of fuels, and it offers the camper or day-tripper, a choice of cooking methods.

It has three sections. In the bottom section is the fuel source. You can build a wood fire, and if you can’t find wood, it can be connected to a bottle for a gas flame. It is accepted by the Royal Parks and Wildlife Service for use in campsites where fires are not allowed, because the flame is totally enclosed in the bottom section. It can also be used with coal.

The main section is large enough for a whole chicken or large fish. This means you can put it on and leave it to cook while you relax. There’s a drip tray above the fire to catch the juices from whatever you’re cooking. Above this, on either side, there are a couple of small baskets to hold your baked and roast vegetables. Just add a bit of butter in some foil and put them into the little roasting trays on the side. The lid, which is the big solid piece of stainless steel, is also multi-purpose, because it can also be used as another cooking surface for frying mushrooms, sausages or eggs.

This complete camp cooker that was $850 is now selling at only $770 and is just as good as other quality camp cookers. Don’t be put off by its size, as it collapses down for storage, making it possible to fit into the boot of the smallest car.

Labeling a diagram

For this task, don’t only focus on what the answer is. Focus on where it is.

Read the text ‘The Take-Me-Anywhere-Camp Cooker’ and label the drawing.

There are different ways of labeling a diagram.

Read the text below and answer the question.

Man: And you have quite a mix of members, or are you focused on certain groups?

Woman: It’s pretty broad, actually. There are something like 200 adult members, so that’s our biggest group, but we also have as many as 100 youth members together with about 50 family group members – and I think we’ll see that section growing to 100 over the next couple of years.

Which chart shows the different types of members currently?

Read the passage ‘Thomas Newcomen’s Steam Engine’ on the next page and do the crossword.

3. A space that has no air or gas in it
4. A part of an engine that moves up and down to make that engine work

Complete these sentences with a word from the exercise above.

c.  A …………………………… has two circles the same size at both ends.

d.  We cannot live inside a …………………………… because there is no air there. There is nothing!

Read the passage and answer the questions.

Thomas Newcomen’s steam engine was one of the first machines to use the power of steam for mechanical work. It was originally used to pump water from mines. There is a boiler over a coal fire which makes steam. This drives the piston in the open top cylinder above the boiler. When the amount of steam increases, the pressure opens the valve, allowing the steam to fill the cylinder and push the piston up. When the piston reaches the top of the cylinder, the first valve is closed and the second valve opens. This second valve sprays cold water into the cylinder from the water tank, condensing the steam and creating a vacuum. The air-pressure from the open-top cylinder pushes the piston down again, pulling the rod down with it. Then the cycle repeats itself all over again.

Write TRUE, FALSE or NOT GIVEN.

1.  Newcomen’s steam engine is still being used today. ……………....………….…………

2.  The open top cylinder is below the boiler. ……………....………….…………

3.  The piston is pushed up by the steam. ……………....………….…………

4.  The boiler only uses gas as a fuel. ……………....………….…………

5.  Thomas Newcomen built the steam engine by hand. ……………....………….…………

Complete the paragraph with no more than TWO words form the passage.

The first valve closes and the second valve opens when the piston reaches the 1. ……………………… of the cylinder. Cold water from the water tank condenses the 2. ……………………… and this creates a 3. ……………………… . Air pressure causes the 4. ……………………… to move up and down.

Look at the diagram.

Label the diagram using no more than TWO words from the passage.
