1.Position Objectives

1.1To assist in the provision of an efficient and effective Library Service to the community.

2.Key Responsibilities/Duties

2.1Ensure that Wollondilly Library and Information Service circulation activities are performed efficiently, effectively and with a focus on quality customer service.

2.2Perform library activities in a professional manner that includes, but is not restricted to, processing, assisting with storytime and children’s programs, library events, home library service, inter library loans, word processing, displays, shelving and weeding.

2.3Explain/exchange information and provide/obtain information from all levels in the organisation and the public in all matters relating to the Library and Information Services on offer.

2.4Assist with maintenance of the library website.

2.5Participate in the customer service point rosterincluding the Mobile Outreach Service.

2.6Solve problems by applying standards and/or established practices and procedures to the task at hand.

2.7Recommend and make improvements to existing methods, techniques and procedures to their daily tasks.

2.8Create and maintain full and accurate records which document activities and decisions and file these records into Trim.

2.9Handle records with care, do not destroy records without authority and protect sensitive records from unauthorised access.

2.10Be aware of Council’s policies and procedures for managing records.

2.11Adhere to Council’s Code of Conduct and policies of the day.

2.12Additional duties as required within the limits of the employee’s skill, competence and training.

4.Extent of Authority

4.1The jobholder will be guided by practices, procedures or precedent, or library legislation. Unusual problems will be solved in consultation with the Library Services Team Leader.

4.2This job requires some level of planning since activities and resources need to be coordinated to ensure an effective and efficient flow of information.

4.3Knowledge of the structure, functions and processes of the whole of the Wollondilly Library and Information Service is required to competently complete the tasks required in this job. Decisions made by this person affect the work and activities of the Wollondilly Library and Information Service.

4.4This job holder is responsible for their own work is not normally required to supervise or direct other staff. They are however expected to cooperate with their co-workers and assist others in their duties when necessary.

4.5In accordance with Council’s policies as delegated from time to time by the General Manager.

5.Accountability

7.Physical Task Requirements

General

7.1Data Entry – tasks involve the use of hands and arms to enter data on a computer with the use of a keyboard and/or mouse.

7.2Verbal communication – tasks involve constant verbal communication with others face to face and via telephone.

7.3Sitting – tasks involve the prolonged periods in a seated position

7.4Colour Perception – tasks require you to be able to differentiate between colours

Manual Handling

7.5Lifting/Carrying – tasks involve raising, lowering, pushing, pulling, striking or moving objects away from or towards the body or the use of tools, equipment or the moving of materials up to 9kg.

7.6Bending/Twisting – tasks involve forward or backward bending or twisting at the waist

7.7Working Indoors – tasks involve exposure to air conditioning and non air conditioned work spaces

8.Occupational Health and Safety

Employees– must cooperate with the employer to ensure the provision of a safe and healthy place of work.

Responsibilities

8.1To comply with all reasonable direction given to them by their immediate Supervisor.

8.2To follow and comply with the direction contained in documented OHS procedures, Safe Work Method Statements or Risk Assessments.

8.3To perform their duties in a safe manner, and to take reasonable care for the safety of others at work.

8.4Ensure that all incidents and near misses are reported to their immediate Supervisor.

8.5To use and maintain all safety equipment and personnel protective equipment (PPE) where directed by the Supervisor or signage.

8.6To be pro active in the identification of potential hazards that may be present in the workplace.

8.7To cease work when there is a genuine concern of risk to their own safety or that of others in the workplace.

9.Selection Criteria

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

9.1The preferred qualification for this job is a TAFE Certificate of Attainment or equivalentwork experience. It is expected that the job holder would have a minimum of 12 months relevant work experience within a public library.

9.2Solid working knowledge and experience in circulation methods within a public library.

9.3Experience in assisting with children’s and young adult services, general library events and activities.

9.4Knowledge of current trends and issues in library and information services.

9.5Demonstrated knowledge of research and special information services, which encompasses the Internet and other online database information facilities.

9.6Demonstrated knowledge of a wide range of library resources and emerging technologies.

9.7Prepared to participate in library shift roster, including reasonable future extensions to this roster.

9.8Current Class C Drivers licence

Desirable:

9.9Experience with basic website maintenance eg: content management systems and writing for the web.
