To Kill a Mockingbird

Chapters 12-15

Project

1.) On a blank sheet of paper, trace a pair of socks.

2.) As you read Chapters 12-15, look for ways that Jem and Scout are growing a part or becoming different. These examples will mostly focus on the fact that Jem’s mindset is changing while Scout’s is staying the same. These changes will also cause conflict between the two.

3.) Just as socks often get lost or pulled away from each other over time or in the laundry, Scout and Jem will begin to grow a part in these sections of the novel. One sock will represent Scout and the other will represent Jem. Label them. Decorate the socks to represent things or ideas that are important to each Jem and Scout. You will now have two mismatched socks.

4.) As you read, record examples of how Jem and Scout are growing a part on the outside of the socks. Be sure to use quotes from the text and correctly cite them. Your examples and quotes should point to the character sock with which they show the most about.

5.) Construct a one-paragraph answer (you need all parts of a literary analysis body paragraph) to the following:

Throughout the beginning of Part Two of To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem begins to mature as a character. Explain how Harper Lee uses details in her novel to show the development of Jem’s character and Scout’s conflict with his changes.
