1.General Position Overview

The role of theFerry Security Officer is to provide an onboard response to resolve suspicious activity or otherwise unlawful or inappropriate behaviour. The Ferry Security Officer will form part of a two person team to provide an overt response capability onboard the ship. The role will promote a safe and secure travel environment and ensure legislative compliance with company security plans and the company’s broader security program.

The role will be directly engaged in risk based vehicle and passenger screening operations as determined by the company security plans.

What are the key internal and external interactions of the role?

Internal interactions:

The role has extensive internal interactions that include but are not limited to:

  • Shore based screening officers.
  • Shore based maritime security guards.
  • Terminal operationsand management.
  • Ship management.

External interactions will include:

  • Passengers.
  • Government regulators.
  • Consultants.

4.Key Accountabilities

The key accountabilitiesassociated with this role are:

  • Understand the requirements of the ISPS code and Ship Security Plan.
  • Prompt detection and resolution of suspicious or potentially suspicious activity to mitigate acts of terrorism or otherwise unlawful or unsafe/inappropriate behaviour.
  • Act as the security response capability onboard the ship.
  • Assume responsibility for the restraining and/or detaining of any person who presents a danger to themselves, others or the ship or its’ equipment.
  • Reporting of all incidents to onboardmanagement or other authorities as directed.
  • Fulfil the role of a Maritime Security Guard.
  • Fulfil the role of Screening Officer, when and where required.
  • Provide support and assistance to the SeniorFerry Security Officer and / or contract security guards.
  • Provide leadership and direction to ship’s crew who may assist in a security related incident.
  • Conduct vehicle and passenger screening functions to ensure security compliance and quality assurance of screening processes and other security measures.
  • Participate in security drills and exercises.
  • Support the ship security function during incidents.
  • At the direction of the Master perform all necessary emergency response or evacuation duties.
  • Ensure all security equipment is present and maintained in good working order.
  • Ensure the Brig is maintained and in good working order at all times.
  • Provide a high level customer service function to passengers.
  • Comply with policy and procedure as contained within the Ferry Security Manual.
  • Other duties as directed by the Senior Ferry Security Officer / Ship Security Officer (Chief Officer).

5.Qualifications

  • Must have accreditation Certificate II Security Operations.
  • Must hold relevant security licence.
  • Must be trained Baton and Handcuffs.
  • Must be able to hold Maritime Security Identification Card.
  • Must be sea safety trained.

6.Experience

  • Experience in maritime or aviation security screening will be highly regarded.
  • Experience in crowd control will be highly regarded.
  • Knowledge of regulated securityenvironments is desirable.
