Course Outline

Welcome to the second semester of English 11, a standard based course. This term, the emphasis will be on the development of written language. Good writing skills are essential for success in any academic or professional endeavor.

In the second semester, the emphasis will be on narrative writing, a continuation of understanding of how to read expository articles and refer to one or more articles when responding to an essay prompt, an extension of reading at the depth of knowledge, level two and increasing vocabulary for application rather than memorization.

Objectives

1.  Develop skills in narrative writing through completion of an autobiography and personal statement

2.  The student will be prepared for the state mandated test through practice in reading expository articles and responding to questions related to the content and demonstrate an ability to write a short synthesis essay which means using more than one source in providing support to the topic.

3.  The student will continue to expand application skills in regards to reading and vocabulary.

Work Quality

·  Classwork ( blue/black ink)

·  Rough Drafts/ Thinking Maps/ Art may be completed in pencil

·  Major Papers MUST be typed

·  If work is sloppy or not meeting basic standards, a grade of zero will be awarded

·  Deadlines must be met. I will provide a window for submission. If you pass the deadline, the paper will not be accepted. A word of advice: Don’t scramble and try to turn in late assignments to try and pass my class.

Classroom Rules

·  All students must be in their seats and ready to work when the bell rings.

·  This semester, I will start calling parents if I see you sauntering about after the bell has rung.

·  The last five minutes of class will be devoted to clean up. My room will not be left a mess.

·  This semester, your reading will be strictly from books, not cell phones. Sorry, too many took advantage of the privilege last semester.

·  Cell phones may be used for flash cards or an assignment that I have specified.

·  Of course, breaking the cell phone rules will result in calls home or referrals to the /dean

·  No disruption will be tolerated. That means talking when the instructor is giving information, inappropriate behavior during class time or insolence will be met with calls home, parent conferences or trips to the dean.

·  If I seem too strict, see your counselor for a class change. I will not be insulted.
