Copy: A verb phrase contains a main verb plus one or more helping verbs.

Copy: Some helping verbs: be (is, am, are, was, were, be, been, being) have (has, have, had), do (does, do, did), can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would

Examples: They may have gone home. Doesn’t anyone here speak Spanish?

Underline the verbs in the passage: “When we passed our tree he gave it a meditative pat on its cement, and remained deep in thought” (Lee 83).
