Use this Section to schedule finishing systems for all previously finished, exterior substrates requiring site repainting or refinishing.

The Infrastructure, Basic Master Specification contains the following series of Sections that specify site painting and finishing:

.1 Section099105 Painting and Finishing General Requirements

.2 Section099113 Exterior Painting and Finishing Schedule

.3 Section099115 Exterior Repainting and Refinishing Schedule (this Section)

.4 Section099123 Interior Painting and Finishing Schedule

.5 Section099125 Interior Repainting and Refinishing Schedule

.6 Section099130 Painting of Mechanical and Electrical Work

These sections are interrelated. Section099105 specifies general requirements while the remaining Sections in the series specify finish systems, i.e. specific products and number of coats, required for various types of substrates. Always include Section099105. Include one or more of the remaining Sections only to the extent they are applicable to the project.

LEED Notes:

LEED does not require paints and coatings applied to the exterior of the building to have low VOC content. The EQ credit is for Indoor Air Quality only.

However, sustainable building practices could be applied to exterior coatings as well. If this is done it is better to follow MPI Green Performance Standards GPS-01 and GPS-02 to ensure that the product has adequate performance as well as lower VOC content.

Data Sheet - General
Section 099115
Exterior Repainting and
2014-11-01 Refinishing Schedule

This Section includes a comprehensive listing of previously finished, exterior, substrates, complete with MPI code numbers, finishing system descriptions and product descriptions.

Individual finishing systems listed in this master schedule must be edited to suit the project. Note that the schedule generally calls for repainting and refinishing with 2 coats, after priming to suit the degree of deterioration. Two coats are recommended if a high quality result is desired. If repainting/refinishing with a single coat is deemed adequate, or if project budget does not permit two coats, the schedule must be edited accordingly.

Specifier has the option of scheduling site repainting and refinishing by one of two methods:

.1 Method #1:Indicate on drawings, on exterior finish schedule, or elsewhere as appropriate, the proper code designation and where applicable, gloss level, of the required finish system for each item or substrate that requires site repainting or refinishing. In this Section, specify the finish system corresponding to each required finish. Coordinate with drawings, exterior finish schedule, etc.

.2 Method #2:Incorporate a comprehensive listing of each item or substrate that requires site repainting or refinishing into this Section. Do not indicate code designations elsewhere. Since this Section describes substrate elements in general terms only, mainly for reference purposes, it may require modification and expansion to include more specific and detailed substrate descriptions. Use this method only where exterior repainting and refinishing are minimal.

Carefully consider all surfaces to be repainted or refinished and ensure that appropriate finishing systems are specified for each surface type. Review the system evaluation and surface preparation sections of the MPI Maintenance Repainting Manual when selecting finishing systems.

Specify only those finishing systems that are applicable to the project. Delete all other finishing systems.

3.1 extERIOR PAINTING AND FINISHING SCHEDULE

.1 The following systems with codes numbers, finishing system description, gloss levels, coats and product descriptions are derived from the MPI Maintenance Repainting Manual and the MPI Approved Products List.

.2 Prime substrate, referencing the 1st coat, for the Degree of Surface Deterioration codes as recommended by the MPI Maintenance Repainting Manual and as follows:

.1 DSD 1: Touch-up.

.2 DSD 2: Spot prime.

.3 DSD 3: Full prime coat.

.3 Where the finishing system requires different product for first coats, DSD 1, 2 or 3, the MPI product numbers will be noted in the finishing system description.

SPEC NOTE: Determine the required priming and ensure the appropriate DSD is specified for each applicable finishing system.

SPEC NOTE: Delete finishing systems as required to include only systems required for the project. Edit all option fields. Where more than one Gloss Level is required for a particular substrate, include all applicable gloss levels and ensure location of various gloss levels are clearly defined in Section099105, Article 2.4, Paragraph 2.4.2
