MODIFIED BITUMINOUS PROTECTED MEMBRANE ROOFING

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1  RELATED DOCUMENTS

  1. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2  SUMMARY

  1. This Section includes self-adhering modified bituminous sheet waterproofing for elevated concrete decks for inverted and protected membrane roofs in hot climates. Basis of design is Grace Bituthene 8000HC.
  2. Related Sections: Refer to other specification sections for materials placed over modified bituminous sheet waterproofing, including as applicable insulation, pavers, overburden, ballast and garden roofing.

1.3  SUBMITTALS

  1. Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s product data and written instructions for evaluating, preparing, and treating substrate, technical data, and tested physical and performance properties of waterproofing.
  2. Shop Drawings: Submit shop drawings showing locations and extent of waterproofing. Include details for substrate joints and cracks, sheet flashings, penetrations, inside and outside corners, tie-ins with adjoining waterproofing, and other termination conditions.
  3. Samples: Submit two 300 by 300 mm (12 by 12 inch) square samples of each type of waterproofing.
  4. Qualification Data: Submit written qualification data for Installer and manufacturer.
  5. Warranties: Submit warranties specified in this Section.

1.4  QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Manufacturer Qualifications: Minimum of 20-years experience in the production of sheet membrane waterproofing.
  2. Installer Qualifications: A firm that is acceptable to waterproofing manufacturer for installation of waterproofing required for this Project.
  3. Source Limitations: Obtain primary waterproofing materials, molded sheet drainage panels and protection courses through one source from a single manufacturer.
  4. Pre-installation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site. Review waterproofing requirements including surface preparation, substrate condition and pretreatment, minimum curing period, forecasted weather conditions, special details and sheet flashings, installation procedures, testing and inspection procedures, and protection and repairs.

1.5  DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

  1. Deliver liquid materials to Project site in original packages with seals unbroken, labeled with manufacturer's name, product brand name and type, date of manufacture, and directions for storing and mixing with other components.
  2. Store liquid materials in their original undamaged packages in a clean, dry, protected location and within temperature range required by waterproofing manufacturer.
  3. Remove and replace liquid materials that cannot be applied within their stated shelf life.
  4. Store rolls according to manufacturer's written instructions. Protect stored materials from direct sunlight.

1.6  PROJECT CONDITIONS

  1. Environmental Limitations: Apply waterproofing within the range of ambient and substrate temperatures recommended by waterproofing manufacturer. Do not apply waterproofing to a damp or wet substrate. Do not apply in fog or mist.
  2. Maintain adequate ventilation during preparation and application of waterproofing materials.

1.7  WARRANTY

  1. Special Manufacturer's Material Warranty: Ten years from date of Substantial Completion. Provide manufacturer's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to replace waterproofing material that does not comply with requirements or that fails to remain watertight within specified warranty period.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1  SELF-ADHERING SHEET WATERPROOFING

  1. Self-Adhering Modified Bituminous Sheet Waterproofing: Bituthene 8000 HC by Grace Construction Products. Sheet shall be not less than 1.5 mm (60-mil) thick, self-adhering sheet consisting of 56 mils (1.4 mm) of rubberized asphalt laminated to a 0.10 mm (4-mil) thick, solar reflective, non-metalized polyethylene film to reduce heat gain while the membrane is exposed and with release liner on adhesive side. The membrane shall be specially formulated to allow application in hot climates and aggressive soils and have the following physical properties:
  2. Tensile Strength: 1.7 MPa (325 psi) minimum; ASTM D 412, Die C, modified.
  3. Ultimate Elongation: 300 percent minimum; ASTM D 412, Die C, modified.
  4. Low-Temperature Flexibility: Pass at minus 32 deg C (minus 25 deg F); ASTM D 1970.
  5. Crack Cycling: Unaffected after 100 cycles of 3-mm (1/8-inch) movement; ASTM C 836.
  6. Puncture Resistance: 222 N (50 lbf) minimum; ASTM E 154.
  7. Hydrostatic-Head Resistance: 61 m (200 feet) minimum; ASTM D 5385.
  8. Water Absorption: 0.10 percent weight-gain maximum after 72-hour immersion at 21 deg C (70 deg F); ASTM D 570.
  9. Vapor Permeance: 2.9 ng/Pa x s x sq. m (0.05 perms); ASTM E 96, Water Method.

2.2  AUXILIARY MATERIALS

  1. General: Furnish auxiliary materials recommended by waterproofing manufacturer for intended use and compatible with sheet waterproofing.
  2. Primer: Liquid solvent based primer recommended for substrate by manufacturer of sheet waterproofing material. Provide Bituthene Primer B1 by Grace Construction Products.
  3. Liquid Membrane: Elastomeric, two-component liquid, cold fluid applied, trowel grade or low viscosity. Provide Bituthene Liquid Membrane by Grace Construction Products.
  4. Flashing Sheet: Textured aluminum sheet combined with a self-adhesive rubber/bitumen compound suitable for exposed flashings. Provide Solarshield by Grace Construction Products.
  5. Prefabricated Drainage Composite Protection Course: Hydroduct Series Drainage Composite by Grace Construction Products. Drainage Composite shall be designed to promote positive drainage while serving as a protection course.:
  6. Hydroduct 650 Drainage Panel for Heavy Duty Applications: polypropylene, woven geotextile faced, molded-sheet drainage panel for horizontal applications.
  7. Hydroduct 401 Drainage and Irrigation panel for Planters and Green Roofs: polypropylene, non-woven geotextile faced, bonded to 11mm thick molded sheet drainage and irrigation panel with a separation geotextile bonded to other face.
  8. Hydroduct 501 Drainage and Irrigation Panel for Planters and Green Roofs, Heavy Duty: polypropylene, non-woven geotextile faced, bonded to 25 mm thick molded sheet drainage and irrigation panel with a separation geotextile bonded to other face.
  9. Protection Course: ASTM D 6506, semi-rigid sheets of fiberglass or mineral-reinforced-asphaltic core, pressure laminated between two asphalt-saturated fibrous liners. Provide Servipak Protection Course by Grace Construction Products with the following characteristics:
  10. Thickness: 3 mm (1/8 inch) nominal, for horizontal applications; 6 mm (1/4 inch) nominal, or two layers 3 mm (1/8 inch) under reinforced concrete slabs.
  11. Adhesive: Rubber-based solvent type recommended by waterproofing manufacturer for type of protection course.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1  EXAMINATION

  1. Examine substrates, areas, and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements and other conditions affecting performance.
  2. Verify that concrete has cured and aged for minimum time period recommended by waterproofing manufacturer.
  3. Verify that concrete is visibly dry and free of moisture. Test for capillary moisture by plastic sheet method according to ASTM D 4263.
  4. Verify that concrete substrates are smooth, float finished and monolithic.
  5. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2  SURFACE PREPARATION

  1. Clean, prepare, and treat substrates according to manufacturer's written instructions. Provide clean, dust-free, and dry substrates for waterproofing application.
  2. Mask off adjoining surfaces not receiving waterproofing to prevent spillage and overspray affecting other construction.
  3. Remove grease, oil, bitumen, form-release agents, paints, curing compounds, and other penetrating contaminants or film-forming coatings from concrete.
  4. Remove fins, ridges, mortar, and other projections and fill honeycomb, aggregate pockets, holes, and other voids.
  5. Prepare, fill, prime, and treat joints and cracks in substrates. Remove dust and dirt from joints and cracks according to ASTM D 4258. Install sheet strips and center over treated construction and contraction joints and cracks exceeding a width of 1.6 mm (1/16 inch).
  6. Prepare, treat, and seal vertical and horizontal surfaces at terminations and penetrations through waterproofing and at drains and protrusions according to ASTM D 6135.

3.3  MODIFIED BITUMINOUS SHEET WATERPROOFING APPLICATION

  1. Install modified bituminous sheets according to waterproofing manufacturer's written instructions and according to recommendations in ASTM D 6135.
  2. Apply primer to substrates at required rate and allow to dry. Limit priming to areas that will be covered by sheet waterproofing in same day. Reprime areas exposed for more than 24 hours.
  3. Apply and firmly adhere sheets over area to receive waterproofing. Accurately align sheets and maintain uniform 50 mm (2-inch) minimum lap widths and end laps. Overlap and seal seams and stagger end laps to ensure watertight installation.
  4. Two-Ply Application (As Required): Install sheets to form a membrane with lap widths not less than 50 percent of sheet widths to provide a minimum of 2 thicknesses of sheet membrane over areas to receive waterproofing.
  5. Horizontal Application: Apply sheets from low point to high point of decks to ensure that side laps shed water.
  6. Apply continuous sheets over sheet strips bridging substrate cracks, construction, and contraction joints.
  7. Seal exposed edges of sheets at terminations not concealed by metal counter flashings or ending in reglets with liquid membrane.
  8. Bridge and cover isolation and expansion joints by others in accordance with membrane manufacturer’s recommendations.
  9. Corners: Prepare, prime, and treat inside and outside corners in accordance with membrane manufacturer’s recommendations.
  10. Repair tears, voids, and lapped seams in waterproofing not complying with requirements. Slit and flatten fishmouths and blisters. Patch with sheet waterproofing extending 6 inches (150 mm) beyond repaired areas in all directions.
  11. Correct deficiencies in or remove sheet waterproofing that does not comply with requirements; repair substrates, reapply waterproofing, and repair sheet flashings.

3.4  PREFABRICATED DRAINAGE COMPOSITE PROTECTION COURSE INSTALLATION

  1. Place and secure molded-sheet drainage panels, with geotextile facing away from wall or deck substrate, according to manufacturer's written instructions. Use adhesives or other methods that do not penetrate waterproofing. Lap edges and ends of geotextile to maintain continuity. Protect installed molded-sheet drainage panels during subsequent construction.

3.5  PROTECTION COURSE INSTALLATION

  1. Place and secure protection course according to manufacturer's written instructions. Use adhesives or other methods that do not penetrate waterproofing. Protect installed panels during subsequent construction.

3.6  FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

  1. Engage a full-time independent site representative qualified by waterproofing membrane manufacturer to inspect substrate conditions; surface preparation; membrane application, flood testing, flashings, protection, and drainage components; and to furnish daily reports to Architect.

3.7  PROTECTION AND CLEANING

  1. Do not permit foot or vehicular traffic on unprotected modified bituminous sheet membrane
  2. Protect waterproofing from damage and wear during remainder of construction period.
  3. Clean spillage and soiling from adjacent construction using cleaning agents and procedures recommended by manufacturer of affected construction.
  4. The installer shall examine conditions of substrates and other conditions under which this work is to be performed and notify the contractor, in writing, of circumstances detrimental to the proper completion of the work. Do not proceed with work until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.
