Purpose
This qualification is for trainees currently employed in printing – reel-fed production. It has been designed for trainees on-job, supported by distance education studies and workshops.
The holder of the qualification will be able to carry out advanced maintenance of reel-fed presses and equipment, make ready and print four colour process work on a reel-fed printing press, and demonstrate knowledge of business and quality principles for printing.
The qualification structure recognises the diversity in printing – reel-fed production companies and the nature of work they undertake. To reflect this, the qualification includes strands to recognise specialist knowledge and skills required for the different printing processes of offset, letterpress, flexographic, and gravure.
This qualification builds upon the knowledge and skills recognised in the National Certificate in Printing (Reel-fed) (Level 3) with strands in Offset, Letterpress, Flexographic, and Gravure [Ref: 0663] and National Certificate in Printing (Production Support) (Level2) with the Reel-fed Printing strand [Ref: 0593].

This qualification has been replaced by the National Certificate in Printing (Printing - Reel-Fed (Level 4) [Ref: 1617].
This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Printing (Printing – Reel-fed:Offset) (Level4) [Ref:0070], the National Certificate in Printing (Printing – Reel-fed:Letterpress) (Level4) [Ref:0069], the National Certificate in Printing (Printing – Reel-fed:Flexographic) (Level4) [Ref:0064], and the National Certificate in Printing (Printing – Reel-fed:Gravure) (Level4) [Ref:0068].

Previous versions of the qualification
Version 5 was issued to extend the last date for completing requirements of version 2 from December 2005 to December 2007. The last date for award is 31December 2008. This change was made to ensure that all those currently training towards version 2 of this qualification have enough time to complete that version. The qualification document was also updated to ensure it meets the style and format requirements for registration.
This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards – see table below.

Version 4 was issued as a result of a review of the qualification. No changes were made.
All new trainees will be enrolled in training programmes leading to version 4 of the qualification. People currently enrolled in training programmes leading to version 2 may either complete that version, or transfer to version 4 under the guidance of the Printing & Allied Industries Training Council.
Version 3 was revised and issued as a result of the review of the core Printing Production unit standards. Unit standard 20057 replaced unit standard 339 in the compulsory section resulting in the credit total being increased from 57-60 to 65-68.
Version 2 was issued to include unit standard 2279 in the core compulsory section. This unit standard was inadvertently omitted during the publication of version 1.
Version 1 replaced the National Certificate in Printing (Printing – Reel-fed: Offset) (Level4) [Ref:0070], the National Certificate in Printing (Printing – Reel-fed: Letterpress) (Level4) [Ref:0069], the National Certificate in Printing (Printing – Reel-fed: Flexographic) (Level4) [Ref:0064], and the National Certificate in Printing (Printing – Reel-fed: Gravure) (Level4) [Ref:0068]. The last date for award of replaced qualifications was December2004.
