Purpose
This qualification recognises a person working as a patroller at a snowsport area, and is competent to work on their own or with responsibility for another patroller-in-training. This is considered the minimum qualification for a person working unsupervised as a patroller.
Holders of this qualification are able to perform daily patrol routines, control avalanches using handcharges, analyse weather information, lead a first party response for avalanche search and rescue, and use lowering techniques for snowsport area operations. The elective section of this qualification allows an opportunity to further skills in emergency response, snow control, communication skills or technical snowsport area operations.
This qualification builds on the prerequisite skills and knowledge gained in the National Certificate in Snowsport (Level 3) with strands in Courtesy Patrol and Patrol [Ref: 0492] and can lead to either the National Certificate in Snowsport (Snow Safety) (Level 6) [Ref:0852] or the National Certificate in Snowsport (Supervision) with strands in Lift Operation, Patrol Leader, Snowsport Equipment, Snowgrooming, Snowmaking, Snowschool, and Ticketing and Guest Services [Ref: 1219].

Prerequisite: The Patrol strand from the National Certificate in Snowsport (Level 3) with strands in Patrol, and Courtesy Patrol [Ref: 0492] or demonstration of equivalent knowledge and skills.

This qualification will be awarded to people who have met the requirements of the compulsory and elective sections.

Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.

Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (Id). Any version of a standard with the same Id may be used to meet qualification requirements that list the Id and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.

Version 3 was issued following review of the Snowsport unit standards.
Changes to structure and content
- The Patrol strand of the National Certificate in Snowsport (Patrol) (Level 3) with strands in Courtesy Patrol and Patrol [Ref: 0492] is now a prerequisite to this qualification.
- Unit standards 56, 57, 62, 378, 4573, 4580, 4581, 4583, 6400, 6401, 6402, 6418, 14470, 14471, 14473, 18100, 18127, 18128, 18129, 18134 and 18135 have been removed as all of them (with the exception of unit standards 56 and 62) are contained in the prerequisite qualification.
- Unit standard 18139 added to compulsory.
- Unit standards 8638, 17694, 17699, and 18138 added to elective.
- Credit total decreased from 137 to 70.
- Unit standards 376 and 4563 moved from elective to compulsory
- Elective credit requirement increased from 4 to 6.
People currently working towards version 2 of this qualification may either complete the requirements for that version or transfer their results to this version of the qualification. The last date for people to complete version 2 is 31 December 2008.

Previous versions of the qualification
Version 2 was issued to reflect industry practices and requirements, and incorporate the impact of changes from the Snowsport unit standard review. The name of qualification was updated from Ski, to Snowsport and from (Ski Patrolling) to (Patrol) and the detailed qualification listings were updated to reflect the Snowsport, Outdoor Recreation, and Core Health unit standard reviews. The credit total increased from 52 to 137 credits. The prerequisite qualification requirement was removed and many of the unit standards included in this qualification. The elective section of the qualification was expanded.
