SCHOLARSHIP CHECKLIST – 2013-2014

  1. GET PREPARED

Submit an Orchard Park Secondary School *Pink Profile Scholarship Form to Student Servicesto be consideredfor scholarships and awards – e.g. specific college/university, business and community awards, update it regularly. *denotes this form will also be used for awards at Graduation.

Prepare a resume and update it frequently (use a word processor) – include education/training, extra-curricular, activities/jobs, experiences/ qualifications, interests/ hobbies

Approach people from whom you will need a letter of reference, give them a resume and sample letters of reference. Give them plenty of time to complete.

Read Michael Howell’s Winning Scholarships (available in O. P.’s Library on overnight loan)

Read Brian Harris’ Scholarship – Tenth Edition 2007 – located in the guidance office

  1. UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGES

Many have automatic scholarships if you have over 80%

Some require specific applications for scholarships or bursaries

Special criteria – e.g. Volunteer Work, Sports, Clubs, Community groups, Leadership

Check university and college calendars and websites

  1. STUDENT SERVICES

Check the scholarship list and posters on the bulletin board next to the cafeteria

Refer to the binder in Student Services which contains the scholarship applications received by O.P.

Request a scholarship application if you plan to appy or print it from the web site

Request a nomination for school sponsored nominated scholarships by putting your name in the Scholarship nomination binder located in guidance, i.e. applicants toLoran Awards

* Loran Scholarship also has direct pool entry opportunities (due Oct. 23rd)

  1. EMPLOYER/COMMUNITY AWARDS

Check parents/guardians/grandparents, companies, clubs, heritage groups, etc.

Ask your own employer/clubs

Information and applications available in May

Consideration for loans are based on assets/income versus expenses

a) deadlines- must be adhered to

- some applications have to be ordered. Inquire early!

b) typed - neat presentation is necessary

c) essays - get help in preparation and proof reading

d) transcript - usually requested, get most up-to-date marks. See Ms. Sullada guidance

e) references- sometimes asked for, be courteous and allow plenty of time for letters

f) leave a copy of your completed scholarship application in Student Services before you mail it.

g) notify Student Services of ALL scholarship offers you receive

h) update the OrchardPark Scholarship Profile Form REGULARLY – submit to Guidance
