OK as you describe it now, you most likely have a bad ignition switch. It is not allowing the starter to engage. The security sensor located inside it goes bad.

Usually when this happens, the odometer will display the word "service" but not always.

This is VERY common and almost always in cold weather.

the switch is about $60.00 and the labor is about $240.00

if you would like to install it youirself i have copied the instructions below.

Otherwise, take the car to a capable mechanic and he will be able to do this for you.

The codes for this failure will be stored in the body computer and not readable with most code readers. You need a better than average scan tool to access those codes.

A b2965 or a b3033 code will be set.

Ignition and Start Switch Replacement

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the steering column trim covers. .
  2. Disconnect the ignition switch harness connector.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the run position.

  4. Remove the ignition switch screws.

Important:The ignition switch must be in the run position during removal in order to avoid damage to the ignition switch.

  1. Remove the ignition switch from the steering column.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the ignition switch and screws on to the steering column.

Tighten
Tighten the screws to 2N·m (17lbin).

  1. Connect the ignition switch harness connector.
  2. Install the steering column trim covers. Important:If the ignition switch is replaced and a learn procedure is not performed, the engine will crank but not start or will start and stall immediately.
  3. Perform the vehicle theft deterrent system learn procedure below
  4. Important:Do not remove the key from the ignition during this procedure. If the key is removed, the procedure will have to be performed from the beginning.

Install a battery charger or jumper cables to a donor car so the battery will not drain during this procedure

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON. The vehicle will not start.
  3. Observe the SECURITY telltale. After approximately 10minutes, the telltale will turn OFF.
  4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5seconds.
  5. Repeat steps1-4 two more times for a total of 3cycles/30minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.

Important:The vehicle learns the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF for 1 full minute before attempting to start the vehicle.

  1. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password.
  2. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100ignition cycles.
  3. If for any reason it still will not start, do the procedure one more time and take the key out of the ign for 1 full minute and then it should start.
