BLUEPRINT READING, SKETCHING, and CAD

Catalog Description:

50 – Blueprint Reading, Sketching, and CAD 3 units

(May be repeated 3 times)

Fundamentals of freehand sketching, reading of blueprints, interpreting of commonly used symbols, pictorial drawings, orthographic projection, geometric construction, dimensioning, and sectioning. Includes a general approach to Computer Aided Drafting (CAD). Focus on subject matter relevant to Machine Tool Technology and Industrial Technology applications and local industry requirements. Designed to provide a working knowledge of methods of graphical communication. 2 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory.

Expected Outcomes for Students:

Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:

1.  discuss the basic concepts of orthographic projection: how various views are developed, their positional relationship to each other on a drawing;

2.  analyze an object or an isometric of an object and choose the required views necessary to accurately describe it: whether one, two, three views, or sectional view;

3.  apply standard signs, accepted symbols, and drafting conventions according to accepted practice;

4.  discuss manufacturing practices, shop practices, specifications, materials lists, and making of bills of materials;

5.  select proper object views, take off dimensions, reproduce an exact object, drawing to scale;

6.  select and implement basic dimensioning systems;

7.  create solid models and drawings using CAD;

8.  sketch various kinds of objects.

9.  Introduction to Computer Aided Drafting Software
